What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation (augmentation mammaplasty) uses implants to increase the size, improve the shape, or restore volume to the breasts. It is suitable for women who feel their breasts are disproportionately small, who have noticed a loss of volume following pregnancy or breastfeeding, or who wish to achieve greater symmetry between the two sides.
Mr. Blackburn works carefully with each patient at consultation to understand their goals, assess their anatomy, and recommend the implant type, size, profile and position most likely to achieve the result they are hoping for. He uses a range of planning tools to help patients visualise different options before making any decision.
Achieving a natural, proportionate result requires as much judgment as technical skill. Mr. Blackburn's approach is unhurried and thorough — he will always recommend what he genuinely believes is best for each patient, rather than simply what is asked for.
Implant Choice & Placement
Implants may be placed beneath the breast tissue (subglandular) or beneath the pectoral muscle (submuscular / dual plane), depending on the amount of natural breast tissue available, the implant size chosen, and the desired outcome. Implants are inserted through short inframammary incisions placed in the natural breast fold, where they heal to barely visible lines.
Mr. Blackburn uses premium cohesive silicone gel implants and takes time to explain the differences between round and anatomical (tear-drop) implants, different profiles, and how each choice would affect the final shape. There is no single "right" implant — the decision is made together, based on your anatomy and what you want to achieve.
The Surgical Approach
Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia, typically lasting 1–2 hours as a day case or with one overnight stay. The implant pocket is carefully created and the implant positioned to sit symmetrically and naturally. Both sides are assessed with the patient semi-upright before closure to confirm balance and position.
Recovery
Most patients are comfortable going home the same day or the morning after surgery. Light activities resume within a few days, and most patients return to desk-based work within 1–2 weeks. Upper body exercise and heavy lifting are avoided for 6 weeks. Implants settle and soften over 3–6 months as swelling resolves and the pocket matures to its final position.
Mr. Blackburn's practice follows an evidence-based scar management protocol beginning with 3M Micropore tape — see the scar care guide for full details.
