Breast Augmentation Surgery
Kingston & Guildford, Surrey

Breast augmentation uses implants to enhance the size, shape or fullness of the breasts, creating natural, proportionate results tailored to your body. Mr. Blackburn is independently certified by the Intercollegiate Cosmetic Surgery Board in cosmetic breast surgery and works closely with each patient to choose the right implant and approach for their individual anatomy and goals.

Mr Adam Blackburn — Consultant Plastic Surgeon

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation (augmentation mammaplasty) uses implants to increase the size, improve the shape, or restore volume to the breasts. It is suitable for women who feel their breasts are disproportionately small, who have noticed a loss of volume following pregnancy or breastfeeding, or who wish to achieve greater symmetry between the two sides.

Mr. Blackburn works carefully with each patient at consultation to understand their goals, assess their anatomy, and recommend the implant type, size, profile and position most likely to achieve the result they are hoping for. He uses a range of planning tools to help patients visualise different options before making any decision.

Achieving a natural, proportionate result requires as much judgment as technical skill. Mr. Blackburn's approach is unhurried and thorough — he will always recommend what he genuinely believes is best for each patient, rather than simply what is asked for.

Implant Choice & Placement

Implants may be placed beneath the breast tissue (subglandular) or beneath the pectoral muscle (submuscular / dual plane), depending on the amount of natural breast tissue available, the implant size chosen, and the desired outcome. Implants are inserted through short inframammary incisions placed in the natural breast fold, where they heal to barely visible lines.

Mr. Blackburn uses premium cohesive silicone gel implants and takes time to explain the differences between round and anatomical (tear-drop) implants, different profiles, and how each choice would affect the final shape. There is no single "right" implant — the decision is made together, based on your anatomy and what you want to achieve.

The Surgical Approach

Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia, typically lasting 1–2 hours as a day case or with one overnight stay. The implant pocket is carefully created and the implant positioned to sit symmetrically and naturally. Both sides are assessed with the patient semi-upright before closure to confirm balance and position.

Recovery

Most patients are comfortable going home the same day or the morning after surgery. Light activities resume within a few days, and most patients return to desk-based work within 1–2 weeks. Upper body exercise and heavy lifting are avoided for 6 weeks. Implants settle and soften over 3–6 months as swelling resolves and the pocket matures to its final position.

Mr. Blackburn's practice follows an evidence-based scar management protocol beginning with 3M Micropore tape — see the scar care guide for full details.

Frequently Asked Questions

What implants does Mr Blackburn use?
Mr Blackburn uses premium cohesive silicone gel implants from leading manufacturers. Implant type, profile, size and shape are selected at consultation based on your anatomy, existing breast tissue, and the result you wish to achieve. He will explain all options clearly and show you how different choices would affect your outcome.
Where is the implant placed — above or below the muscle?
Implants can be placed beneath the breast tissue (subglandular) or beneath the pectoral muscle (submuscular / dual plane). The choice depends on your anatomy, the amount of breast tissue available, and your desired outcome. Mr Blackburn will recommend the most appropriate plane at consultation and explain the advantages of each approach for your specific case.
Where is breast augmentation performed?
Mr Blackburn performs breast augmentation at New Victoria Hospital, Kingston upon Thames (0208 050 4903) and Mount Alvernia Hospital, Guildford (01483 904903). Self-referrals are welcome at both sites.
What is the recovery time?
Most patients return to desk-based work within 1–2 weeks and resume most activities by 4–6 weeks. Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided for 6 weeks. Implants settle and soften over 3–6 months as swelling resolves and the pocket matures.
Will breast augmentation affect my ability to breastfeed?
Breast augmentation does not usually affect the ability to breastfeed. Mr Blackburn uses incisions and implant placement techniques that minimise disruption to glandular tissue and ducts. This will be discussed fully at consultation for patients who plan to have children in the future.
How long do breast implants last?
Modern silicone implants do not have a fixed "expiry date" and many patients go many years without needing replacement. However, implants are not considered lifetime devices and you should expect to consider replacement or removal at some point. Mr Blackburn will discuss the longer-term management of implants at consultation, including what to look for and when to seek review.
